Luisa Barahona
Many citizens of Honduras pay for their water as a community. Everyone in that community pays an equal
amount - but what if one person used more than another? What if people are less careful about their water
usage because they know that others will pay for most of it?
This is why Luisa Barahona’s system is so important. Now, in her community and many others nearby, each
person only pays for their own water. Since it is their money, they are more careful about minimizing the
amount of water they use.
Barahona has done much more than that. Among other things, she has implemented sanitation loans in
Honduras for the first time ever. With these loans, many citizens in her community have been able to build
pour-flush toilets. These loans are paid back in monthly bills.
Now, Barahona continues to help those in need of clean water. She is the president of El Negrito’s Water
Board Association and a member of Gonzalo Maldonado Water Committee. She has also supported many other
related organizations.
Luisa Barahona is the epitome of the fact that one person can change the world.
